One of the most anticipated events of the Summer Olympic Games is, of course, basketball. However, while the men tend to take center stage, more eyes will be on the women's basketball games than ever before. Twelve of the best women's teams in the world will descend on Paris to battle for the right to become Olympic gold medalists.

The odds heavily favor Team USA, but there will be quite a few excellent basketball players on hand. No one should get overlooked.

Women's Basketball at Olympics 2024 Predictions

2024 Women's Basketball Olympics Betting Odds & Predictions

Team USA, the gold medal winner at nine of the last ten Summer Olympic Games, is a heavy favorite to win for the eighth consecutive Games. At -1800, the team's odds at FanDuel, the U.S. Women's National Team has a 94.74% chance of taking home the gold once again.

However, since these are the 12 best teams in the world, there will not be an easy game for anyone.

Belgium, in fact, nearly beat Team USA during the qualifying play. The Belgians took an early lead and led for much of the game. While Team USA tied the game up several times, they did not pull ahead for good until  Breanna Stewart tipped in the game-winner at the buzzer.

They'll meet again in Group Play on Aug. 1.

Team USA is not the only roster with WNBA players on it. While having a roster of the WNBA's best gives Team USA an edge, anything can happen on game day. It would be a shock if they didn't make it past Group Play, but they haven't won the gold yet.

Best Bets for Women's Basketball Olympics 2024

The case in favor of Team USA is compelling based on its history in the Olympics alone. The U.S. has won gold in the last seven Summer Olympic Games and nine of 12 since women's basketball debuted in the 1976 Games in Montreal.

Team USA has not lost a game in the Olympics since 1992 and has an all-time record of 70-3.

However, at -1800, there is no value in betting on Team USA to win. Bettors will need to risk $1800 to win $100. Those odds give them a 94.74% chance to win. As such a heavy favorite, every team other than the United States is a long shot.

While there is a good chance you'll lose your money betting on one,  what if you didn't? A $25 bonus bet on Belgium could result in a $725 payday; if you lose, you are out a bonus bet. You don't lose any money.

Here are some of our favorite longshots for women's basketball in the 2024 Summer Olympics:

Belgium (+2900 at FanDuel)

Team Belgium faced Team USA in the first game of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and nearly pulled off an epic upset (Team USA won, 81-79). Three-point shooting played a significant role in the outcome. The Americans failed to make a three in the first half while the Belgians hit seven of 15.

It will take a near-perfect game to beat Team USA. Belgium nearly did in the qualifier despite losing the turnover battle (20-13), which the U.S. turned into 32 points. Team USA also led that game in fast break points, second chance points, points in the paint, and points from the bench.

However, it will become apparent during Group Play if Belgium has what it takes to win gold. They'll have to face Team USA and Team Japan, who won the silver in the last Olympics and will need to beat one of them to make it to the knockout stage.

They will enter the Games as the No. 6 team in the world according to FIBA's World Ranking.

Bet on Belgium (+2900) at FanDuel

France (+2900 at FanDuel)

Les Bleues is dealing with injuries to several key players, but the team is still highly regarded and expected to play well during the Summer Games. Led by Seattle forward Gabby Williams, the roster is not stacked with WNBA players like the U.S. and Australia. However, it has plenty of young talent ready to make a name for themselves.

Bet on France (+2900) at FanDuel

Australia (+6000 at FanDuel)

According to their odds, Team Australia has a 1.64% chance of winning the Gold. However, the program has a long history of being competitive in the Summer Games, winning a medal in four consecutive games from 1996 to 2012. It knows how to win.

But it will not be easy to advance past Group Play. Australia is in Group B and will face talented teams from Canada and France. According to FIBA's World Ranking, Team Australia is currently the No. 3 team in the world.

With a roster stacked with WNBA talent, i.e., Seattle's Ezi Magbegor, Minnesota's Alanna Smith,  and more, the Opals may have the best chance of playing the kind of game it will take to beat Team USA.

Women's Basketball Olympics 2024 Pick

Our pick would be Team USA, but since there is no value in betting on them at -1800, our longshot picks are Team Belgium and Team Australia.

The quarterfinals are scheduled for August 7, the semifinals for August 9, and the medal games for August 11.

Women's Basketball Olympics—History

Women's basketball was added to the Summer Olympics, starting with the 1976 Games in Montreal. The Soviet Union won the first two; the U.S. won silver in the first and did play in the 1980 Games in Moscow. Since then, Team USA has dominated the Olympic competition.

Best Bets for Women's Basketball Olympics 2024, 3 x 3

Team USA won the inaugural 3 x 3 tournament in the last Summer Olympics, but the competition was tougher than in 5 x 5. Many of the games were competitive and well-played by both teams. As the defending champs, it is not surprising that Team USA opened as the betting favorite.

However, according to their odds, they have a 38.46% chance of winning. With plus-money odds, there is value in betting on Team USA to repeat, but bettors would be wise to survey the rest of the field before deciding.

Here are a few of our favorite picks other than Team USA:

Canada (+340 at FanDuel)

Team Canada is the No. 1 3 x 3 team in the FIBA 3 x 3 tour standings and contains the three top players in their individual rankings: Katherine Plouffe, Michelle Plouffe, and Paige Crozon. It will be Team Canada's first trip to the Olympics for 3 x 3 basketball.

With their experience and talent level as a squad, it is surprising that the Canadians are not the betting favorite.

Bet on Canada (+340) at FanDuel

France (+340 at FanDuel)

Team France is second in the FIBA 3 x 3 tour standings, just 60 points behind Canada. Two team members, Laetitia Guapo (No. 7) and Myriam Djekoundade, rank in the top ten of FIBA's individual player rankings. Their experience playing on the tour could prove pivotal in the Olympic tournament.

Bet on France (+340) at FanDuel

Women's Basketball Olympics 2024, 3 x 3 Pick

You almost have to take Team USA while they still have plus-money odds.

However, if you only want to bet on one team, take Team Canada. The talent level is top-notch, including the top three players in FIBA's individual rankings. Their experience playing together should give them an edge.

Bet on USA (+160) at FanDuel

Women's Basketball Olympics 2024 Schedule

Tournament play will begin on Tuesday, July 30, starting with Team USA taking on Germany, Australia vs. Canada, Azerbaijan vs. Spain, and France vs. China. The semifinals and medal games are scheduled for Monday, August 5.

Women's Basketball Olympics—History

Since 3 x 3 was just added to the 2020 Games in Tokyo, there is not much history to speak of. Team USA won the inaugural tournament, with the ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) taking silver and China winning bronze.
