PGA Shares Support for Legalizing Sports Betting in Georgia

Sports betting proponents in the Peach State just picked up a powerful new ally.

The PGA Tour’s Scott Warfield recently spoke out in support of legalizing sports betting in Georgia. The head of the Tour’s gaming division shared his thoughts during a meeting with the House Study Committee on Gaming. His message highlighted the benefits for Georgia, as well as the PGA.

Warfield’s recent statements are likely to carry significant weight with Georgia lawmakers. While the PGA isn’t based in the state, they have deep ties through tournaments like The Masters. That gives the pro golf league a powerful voice in Peach State politics.

The PGA Tour’s stance on sports betting is bad news for Georgia lawmakers who have stood in the way of legal sports betting. While the PGA alone may not be able to force its hand significantly, the league could seek allies among the state’s pro sports teams to help put sports betting on the November 2026 ballot.

We saw a similar effort work in Missouri, where the state’s pro sports teams led a signature campaign to put sports betting on the ballot. If the PGA can lead a similar effort in Georgia, it would bypass lawmakers, eliminating their ability to create a careful framework.

Problem Gambling Concerns Remain

While support for legal sports betting is strong, concerns persist over the potential increase in problem gambling. That has led several lobby groups and lawmakers to point out the danger the industry would bring to many residents. The House Study Committee on Gaming is examining the potential level of damage a legal market would create, as well as strategies to mitigate it.

The PGA’s supportive stance on sports betting puts industry opponents in a tough spot. While they remain opposed to expanding gambling in the state, the fear of the PGA and other groups working against them may lead to action. If they want to help shape a safe and responsible framework, passing a bill in the state legislature may be the only option.
