The second stage of the PDC Home Tour brings a slightly longer format with games now played over the best of 11 legs, rather than the first to five in the previous round. That should suit the higher ranked players, giving them a chance to rectify a poor start in matches.

The tournament continues with the seventh day of the Last 32 stage with Nathan Aspinall the man to beat. Jose De Sousa produced one of the stellar displays in the first round but can he repeat it? Jamie Hughes is moving up the rankings and could cause a shock. Jesus Noguera from Spain makes up Monday’s four.

Aspinall Should Find It Easy

Nathan Aspinall is back in action on Monday evening after winning all three of his matches on Night 10 just over a month ago. It’s a long time to wait between rounds but the current world No. 7 is red hot favorite to progress to the Last 8.

The 28-year-old, playing out of his Stockport home, has been on a career roll after winning a maiden Players Championship title in September 2018. Since then he has won the 2019 UK Open, reached the semi-final stage of the last two PDC World Championships, and also the final four of this year’s Masters.

Aspinall played in the second week of the Darts At Home precursor to this Home Event and topped his group with two wins and one defeat. On Night 10 he took three wins against Steve Brown 5-2, Ryan Joyce 5-2, and Simon Stevenson 5-1 as he averaged 91.79 throughout a dominant display.

The Asp will become the tournament favorite should he win Group Seven on Monday and the current +500 will shrink markedly ahead of the Last 8. If you fancy him to lift the trophy, now is the time to back him. There is however better value elsewhere but playing Aspinall to win all three of his matches on Monday could well reap rewards. He is a level up.

DeSousa The Threat

Jose de Sousa will be waiting to pounce if Aspinall suffers an off night. The Portuguese 46-year-old has a raft of trophies on his mantelpiece but the furthest he has progressed at PDC major level has been a Last 32 berth at the 2019 Players Championship Finals. The world No. 59 did win two Players Championship ranking titles in 2019 and was phenomenal in the first round of the Home Event.

The Special One averaged 104.80 in winning all three matches on Night 25 in what was arguably the most impressive display of the first round. He swept past Robert Thornton, Keagan Brown, and Reece Robinson and dropped only one leg, to Robinson, in the process. A repeat of that sort of form would be difficult for anyone to live with, but it is an almost impossible standard to maintain.

Hughes and Noguera Making Up The Numbers?

Jamie Hughes won all three matches on Night 24 as he won 5-2 against Krzysztof Ratajski and beat Darius Labanauskas 5-2 and Toni Alcinas 5-4. Yozza, playing from Tipton in England, averaged a creditable 91.66 but he may have to raise the bar to trouble Aspinall on Monday.

The 34-year-old is the current world No. 41 and is not entering his living room with the intention of playing second fiddle in the Last 32.

He reached the semi-finals of the BDO World Championships in 2016 and 2017 and on the PDC Tour has a quarter-final appearance in this year’s UK Open to his name. If we put down De Sousa’s first-round fireworks as a one-off, Hughes is likely to be Aspinall’s biggest threat. Hughes has played Aspinal three times and one just the once. None of the others will have ever played each other before Monday.

Jesus Noguera topped the Night 22 standings on leg difference after beating Ian White 5-3, James Wilson 5-2 and losing 5-2 to Danny Noppert. Yuso averaged 82.16 on an evening where the quality wasn’t as high as some of the others. At 120th in the world, the 30-year-old playing from his Spanish home might struggle to keep pace with his three opponents and it should be “adios”.

Nathan Aspinall to win all three matches is a +131 shot. Jamie Hughes is a decent +120 punt to beat Jose de Sousa. But the best bet of the day is the +140 for Jesus Noguera to lose all three of his matches – just parlay up the prices of his three opponents.
