The theatrics of opening day are behind us, and Monday begins the first full week of the 2026 MLB season. During the first weekend of the season, home runs didn’t necessarily come from the most expected sources. While that’s added a little wrinkle, we’re still feeling confident about our home run picks for Monday.

Buxton is off to a great start this season, going 4 for 12 with two extra-base hits over Minnesota’s first three games. The only thing he hasn’t done this season is hit a home run. Given the power he has, it’s only a matter of time until he hits his first home run of 2026, so it makes sense to target Buxton on Monday.
The other reason to target Buxton is his history against Kansas City starter Kris Bubic. He’s 5 for 10 with a pair of doubles against Bubic. While he’s never taken him deep, Buxton obviously has a strong track record against the pitcher he’s facing on Monday, so all of the ingredients are there for him to go deep.

Guerrero and the Blue Jays have also started fast, sweeping the Athletics over the weekend. The power hasn’t come yet, as Guerrero is 4 for 12 with no extra-base hits through three games. But for a guy who has hit 20-plus homers in five straight seasons, the power is coming.
Like Buxton, Guerrero also has a great pitching matchup on Monday against Tokoyuki Sugano, who starts for the Rockies. Sugano gave up 33 home runs last season, among the most among MLB pitchers. In limited at-bats against him, Guerrero is 3 for 7 with a double against Sugano, so hitting a home run against him isn’t out of the question.

Yelich was one of the best hitters in baseball during the first weekend of the season. He went 5 for 9 over two games, and then came off the bench on Sunday to hit a pinch-hit home run. After battling injuries for a few seasons, Yelich mashed 29 home runs last season, and given his hot start in 2026, it’s worth targeting him on Monday and trying to ride the hot hand.
Facing Nick Martinez of the Rays is also favorable for Yelich. He’s 5 for 16 in his career against Martinez, including a double and a home run. Martinez allowed 22 home runs in 165.2 innings last season, so it’s not as if he specializes in preventing the long ball. That’s enough to take a chance on Yelich staying hot.

Let’s call Santana Monday’s deep cut among Monday’s home run targets. The 39-year-old is just 1 for 9 over his first three games of the season. However, he’s matched up against an even older pitcher, as the D’Backs host Justin Verlander and the Tigers. While he’s a career .216 hitter against Verlander, Santana has nine career home runs against him in 88 at-bats.
Even though both players have been in the big leagues a long time, nine career home runs against a pitcher can’t be ignored. In his old age, the 43-year-old Verlander can be vulnerable to the long ball. If he makes a mistake, hitters can punish him, and Santana still has enough power to take Verlander deep. With these odds, it’s worth taking a flier on Santana to hit a home run.
