The Dodgers have been the best offensive team in baseball and they will face the Royals, who have been terrible at the dish. The good thing for Kansas City is they will start Seth Lugo who has been their best pitcher over the last two seasons.
Los Angeles is full of superstar talent on offense but I think they will struggle against Lugo early in this contest. He is 4-5 with a 2.93 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP.
Lugo has struck out 68 batters in 86 innings which is unusual, but he is still finding a way to get the job done. In his last start he went 6.1 innings allowing one run while striking out seven.
Before Ohtani underwent Tommy John surgery he was one of the nastiest pitchers in baseball. He is slowly climbing his way back into the starting rotation and will likely only throw one inning in this game which works perfectly for the NRFI.
In 2023, Ohtani was 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA. He struck out 167 batters in 132 innings. His pitch arsenal is filthy and the Royals are terrible offensively, making for a solid combination.
Kansas City is hitting .244 as a club in 2025 which is below average compared to the rest of the league. Their approach at the plate with runners in scoring position has been brutal and I don’t see this changing anytime soon.
I trust Ohtani to have a clean first inning against a bad Royals offense, and Lugo to shut down the Dodgers.

The second NRFI I’m focusing on is in Cincinnati where the Reds will face the Padres. Andrew Abbott has been phenomenal in 2025 and is exactly the arm I want to see on the hill.
Abbott comes into this contest at 7-1 with a 1.79 ERA. In 75.1 innings he has fanned 72 batters with a 0.97 WHIP.
In Abbott’s last three starts he has pitched 21.2 innings allowing just two earned runs on 15 hits. He’s not a pitcher that's going to strike out numerous batters, but Abbott stays ahead in counts and limits walks.
Vasquez has been solid for San Diego this season posting a record of 3-4 with a 3.60 ERA. He’s been very strong in his last three starts.
I like the NRFI because of the two solid pitchers facing inconsistent offenses. Look for Abbott and Vasquez to have clean first innings and for runs to be hard to find all game.

Nationals vs. Angels - Michael Soroka vs. Kyle Hendricks : Hendricks has been brutal the past few seasons as he has gotten older. Both pitchers have ERA’s of almost five.
Marlins vs. Diamondbacks - Sandy Alcantara vs. Brandon Pfaadt : Alcantara hasn’t been the same pitcher since his Cy Young year as he is 4-8 with a 6.69 ERA. Pfaadt also has an ERA of 5.49.
