Just when it looked like the Detroit Tigers offense were starting to round back into form, negative regression looms large on Monday night as they are set to face off against Paul Skenes who has been dominant this season. A few hours after their opening pitch, we turn our attention towards the Kansas City Royals and Chicago Cubs as a pair of productive arms are set to take the mound.

After winning the NL Rookie of the Year award last year, Paul Skenes has managed to elevate his game this season as the Pittsburgh Pirates ace is currently listed as one of the betting favorites for the Cy Young. Heading into Monday, Skenes is averaging an ERA of 2.01, a WHIP of 0.926, and a FIP of 2.41. His success stems from his ability to avoid contact as Skenes also averages less than five Hits per game.
In a matchup against Detroit, Skenes will have the opportunity to build on his momentum as he faces off against a Tigers offense who has struggled with making contact at a consistent rate in their past two weeks of play. Especially with his back end giving him a high level of support with their coverage as the Pirates defense ranks above league average in Defensive Efficiency and in Fielding Percentage.
As for Jack Flaherty, the Tigers starting pitcher is in a favorable position to match Skenes level of production as he faces off against a Pirates offense who ranks in the bottom half of the board in Contact Rate and in On Base Percentage. Pittsburgh’s inability to get into scoring position will be on full display as Flaherty enters the contest averaging less than one Hit Against and more than one Strikeout per Inning.

Like the Tigers, the Kansas City Royals offense have also been abysmal as of late as they continue to fall down the board in most key offensive metrics. As of writing, the Royals offense ranks below league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, On Base Percentage, and in Slugger Percentage.
Unfortunately for the Royals, their struggles on offense are poised to persist as they are set to battle it out against Ryan Brasier who is averaging an ERA of 1.04, a WHIP of 0.923, and a FIP of 1.99. Chicago’s back end also helps limit the amount of contact variance in Brasier’s starts which increases his chances of keeping a clean sheet as the Cubs defense ranks sixth overall in Defensive Efficiency.
On the other side of the field, the Royals Noah Cameron draws a much tougher assignment as he faces off against a Cubs offense who ranks near the top of the board in the same previously mentioned offensive metrics. Fortunately for Cameron, the Royals pitcher possesses more than enough individual production to neutralize the Cubs top of their order as his ERA of 2.31 and FIP of 3.68 indicates.

San Francisco Giants vs. Atlanta Braves - Hayden Birdsong vs. Bryce Elder - Positive regression looms large over the San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves top of their orders as they are set to battle it out against a pair of pitchers who average a WHIP more than 1.400 and a FIP higher than 4.50.
