Negative regression looms large over the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers top of their orders as they are set to face off against Freddy Peralta and Yoshinobu Yamamoto in game two of the NLCS. Especially when both pitchers are surrounded by a pair of productive back ends as this helps limit the amount of variance in their starts which increases their chances of keeping a clean sheet.

After ending his rookie year on a high note, Yoshinobu Yamamoto was able to carry over his momentum into this season as the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher averaged an ERA of 2.49 and a WHIP of 0.990 in 30 starts. Yamamoto’s success on the mound can be attributed to his high Whiff Rate as the Cy Young contender also averaged less than one Hit Allowed and more than one Strikeout per Inning Pitched.
While a matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers high powered offense seems daunting on paper, Yamamoto possesses more than enough individual production to neutralize the top of their order as his FIP of 2.94 indicates. Yamamoto’s back end also helps reduce the amount of contact variance in his starts with their coverage as the reigning World Series champions defense ranks top-10 in Fielding Percentage.
On the other side of the field, Freddy Peralta draws a tough assignment as he faces off against a Dodgers offense who ranks near the top of the board in Team Total Hits, On Base Percentage, and in Slugger Percentage. The Dodgers ability to string together their hits helps them in their efforts of scoring at a high rate as their offense also ranks above league average in RBIs and in Total Runs Scored.
Luckily for Milwaukee, Peralta is capable of cooling off the Dodgers red hot bats as the Brewers pitcher takes the mound averaging an ERA of 2.70, a WHIP of 1.075, and a FIP of 3.65. The Brewers high level of play on defense also helps lessen the chances of the Dodgers getting on base by an error as their back end resides in the top half of the board in Defensive Efficiency and in Fielding Percentage.
With both pitchers in a favorable position to get off to a hot start, expect no runs to be scored in the first inning in game two of the NLCS. Especially with their back ends thriving in coverage, making it harder for both offenses to find the gaps in the outfield. Should the Brewers give Quinn Priester the starting nod instead of Peralta, then reduce the size of your wager.
