After leading the league in Pitcher Wins last year, Max Friend will be able to build on his momentum by neutralizing the San Francisco Giants who ranked below league average in most offensive metrics. Logan Webb on the other hand draws a much tougher assignment as he faces off against Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees top of their order who possess an elite blend of power and contact ability.

Even though Max Friend was unable to dethrone Tarik Skubal for the AL Cy Young award, the New York Yankees pitcher was still dominant in 2025, finishing the year with an ERA of 2.86, a WHIP of 1.101, and a FIP of 3.07. Fried’s success can be attributed to his ability to avoid contact, averaging less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched.
Fried’s back end also helped further limit the amount of variance in his appearances on the mound as he is supported by a defense who ranks above league average in Defensive Efficiency. With the San Francisco Giants expected to rank in the bottom half of the board in Contact Rate and in On Base Percentage, Fried will be able to make quick work of their top of the order and keep a clean sheet.
On the other side of the field, Logan Webb is set to take the mound for the Giants, bringing with him a rocket arm that generates Strikeouts at a high rate. In his 34 starts last season, Webb led the league with 244 Strikeouts, averaging more than one K per Inning Pitched. His aggression also helped him keep opposing runners out of scoring position, finishing the year with a WHIP of 1.237 and a FIP of 2.60.
Every bit of Webb’s individual production will be needed in his Opening Day matchup against the New York Yankees, facing off against an offense who will once again rival the top of the league in OPS and in Total Runs Scored. Luckily for Webb, Trent Grisham has struggled to make contact in the preseason, allowing the Giants pitcher to remain aggressive with Judge following after, lowering the Yankees chances of getting in scoring position in the first inning.
