Get ready for another edition of MLS’ most thrilling new rivalry, El Trafico. Los Angeles’ two MLS teams will once again battle it out in a rematch that was seen just last month during the group stage of the MLS Is Back tournament.
A match that the Galaxy will likely want to forget.
After scoring first in the 5th minute, the Galaxy was then pinned back in a 6-2 demolition by LAFC. Charged forward by four goals from Diego Rossi, LAFC stunned and embarrassed their cross-city rivals.
Will we see it again this Saturday? While the status of two key players for the Galaxy is up in the air, conversely, for LAFC, they’ll now have the return of last season’s league MVP.
Carlos Vela Is Back For LAFC
Without a doubt, Vela is at the very top of the pyramid when it comes to MLS talent. With more goals than any other player in 2019, the Mexican winger deservedly won last season’s MVP award.
This is why it was such a shame to see the player decide to miss out on the MLS Is Back tournament. Others valiantly attempted to compensate for his absence — such as Rossi with his seven goals — but there was still something missing from the team that was ultimately knocked out in the quarterfinal stage of the tournament.
In steps Vela, and with the best player league now well-rested, LAFC will have no excuses against the Galaxy.
The Questionable Status Of The Galaxy’s Star Players
Is Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez fully healthy?
At the time of writing, there are no guarantees regarding the marquee player who was expected to be a replacement and perhaps even an upgrade over Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Underwhelming in his first appearances, the Galaxy is now dealing with a more sizable setback as they wait to see whether he will be game-ready by this weekend.
More importantly, they might be without their glue in the midfield, Jonathan dos Santos. Recovering from a groin injury from earlier this year, there are still doubts regarding a possible place for Dos Santos in this weekend’s gameday roster.
Without Dos Santos, the Galaxy’s midfield was torn to pieces in the MLS Is Back tournament. Fans should keep their fingers crossed that the 30-year-old returns soon because if not, the Galaxy could be eyeing a number of losses ahead.
A Recognizable Difference In Backup Plans
Without Dos Santos (and without Hernandez for two matches), the Galaxy was in shambles as they were immediately pushed out of the MLS Is Back tournament at the conclusion of the group stage.
Without Vela, LAFC counted on other figures like Brian Rodriguez, Bradley Wright-Phillips, and Rossi to share the responsibility left by their captain.
It’s a simple yet apt comparison when looking at both teams. It also speaks to the depth of each roster. For LAFC, what has made the squad so powerful is the availability of top MLS talent on their bench. As for the Galaxy, we’ll have to wait and see if they’ve had enough time to fix their problems that were put on display in MLS Is Back.
