The last five Eagles-Commanders games have ended with at least 44 total points
The Commanders are tied for the most pass plays of 40 or more yards conceded this season
Jalen Hurts is coming off a three-touchdown performance in last week’s 31-0 win over the Raiders.
The NFL’s Week 16 Saturday doubleheader begins with an NFC East rivalry game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders. It’s worth remembering that this is a rematch of last season’s NFC Championship Game. Unfortunately, Washington’s season hasn’t unfolded as many expected, so the Commanders have nothing at stake in this game. On the other hand, the Eagles are hoping to build some late-season momentum after snapping a three-game losing streak last week, making this an important game, as they seek their fourth win in Washington in the last five years.
With a win, the Eagles can clinch the NFC East title, securing at least one home playoff game. Naturally, the reigning Super Bowl champs have higher hopes than just winning the division. Following last week’s win, the Eagles saw a bump in their Super Bowl LX odds. If they can keep up the momentum after last week’s 31-0 win over the Raiders, the idea of a repeat won’t be as far-fetched as it was during the team’s recent losing streak.

Even after a 31-0 dismantling of the Raiders this week, the Eagles aren’t the most reliable favorite to back. However, a high-scoring game between these teams does seem likely. In the last five meetings between the Eagles and Commanders, 44 points is the lowest point total, as the losing team has scored over 30 points in three of those five games.
While the Philadelphia offense has been inconsistent this season, the Commanders have allowed at least 21 points in eight of their last nine games. Even the Giants scored 21 points against them last week, so the Eagles should be able to exceed that number with their offensive playmakers. Meanwhile, last week’s shutout of the Raiders was an aberration for the Eagles, who have yielded at least 20 points in 10 of their 14 games. With the Commanders hitting the over in four of their six home games, there should be plenty of offensive fireworks in this game.

Smith figures to be an obvious beneficiary of Washington’s porous pass defense. The Commanders have allowed the fifth-most yards through the air this season and are tied with the Cowboys for the most pass plays of 40+ yards allowed. That points to a big game for Smith, who is Philadelphia’s best deep threat.
In fairness, Smith’s productivity has been inconsistent this season despite being the team’s leading receiver. He’s been held to 50 receiving yards or less in four of his last five games. Oddly enough, Smith still has at least one catch of 30 yards or more in four of his last six games. He’s bound to make at least one big play against the Washington defense in this game. That should set him up to go over 57.5 yards, even if he only has a few catches.

Hurts definitely fell into a slump during most of October and November. But his three passing touchdowns last week against the Raiders are a good sign. Granted, that game didn’t come against strong competition. However, Hurts has another favorable matchup this week against the Washington defense.
The Commanders have allowed 28 passing touchdowns this season. Only the Cowboys and Bengals have allowed more scores through the air. In the last two weeks, both J.J. McCarthy and Jaxson Dart have thrown multiple touchdowns against the Commanders. If those quarterbacks can do it, Hurts can as well, especially with the weapons the Eagles have.
