Tarik Skubal has a great opportunity to strengthen his case for the AL Cy Young award on Wednesday night as the AL Central leading Detroit Tigers face off against the Pittsburgh Pirates who severely underwhelm on offense. Later in the night, we turn our attention towards the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals as both lineups are set to face off against a pair of productive arms on the mound and two defenses who excel in coverage.

After winning the Cy Young last season, Tarik Skubal is in a great position to win it again as he is currently listed as the sizable betting favorite to hoist the award for the second straight year. As of writing, Skubal is averaging an ERA of 1.99, a WHIP of 0.808, a FIP of 1.87, less than 4.5 Hits Allowed per game, and nearly 8 Strikeouts per contest.
Against Pittsburgh, Skubal will have a great opportunity to put together a dominant performance and strengthen his claim for the award as he faces off against a Pirates offense who ranks near the bottom of the board in Contact Rate, Total Runs Scored, RBIs, and in On Base Percentage. Especially with his back end excelling in coverage as the Tigers rank top-10 in Defensive Efficiency and in Fielding Percentage.
Like Skubal, Andrew Heaney has also excelled at keeping opposing runners out of scoring position by avoiding contact as he is averaging an ERA of 3.33 and less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched. While he does draw a much tougher assignment, his back end at least helps reduce the amount of contact variance in his starts as the Pirates defense ranks fourth overall in Defensive Efficiency.

After years of mediocrity, Patrick Corbin has seemingly revived his career with the Texas Rangers as the newly acquired pitcher is averaging an ERA of 3.66 and less than one Hit Allowed per Inning Pitched. The level of support he gets from his back end is also far better than what he received in Washington as the Rangers defense leads the league in Defensive Efficiency and in Fielding Percentage.
Fortunately for Corbin, the sporadic pitcher will have the opportunity to build on his momentum as he faces off against a Kansas City offense who struggles with getting on base. Even though they rank 13th overall in Contact Rate, their Hits are far and few inbetween as they also rank below league average in Total Runs Scored, RBIs, Bases on Walks, and in On Base Percentage.
On the other side of the field, Kris Bubic is in a position to thrive as he faces off against a Rangers offense who ranks in the bottom ten in the same previously mentioned offensive metrics. Their inability to make contact will be on full display against Bubic as the Royals pitcher averages an ERA of 1.92, a WHIP of 1.067, a FIP of 2.56, and over one Strikeout per Inning Pitched.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Toronto Blue Jays - Eduardo Rodriguez vs. Eric Lauer - Positive regression looms large over the Toronto Blue Jays offense as they face off against the Arizona Diamondbacks Eduardo Rodriguez who is currently averaging an ERA of 6.27, a WHIP of 1.589, and a FIP of 4.27.
Los Angeles Angels vs. New York Yankees - Jack Kochanowicz vs. Ryan Yarbrough - After failing to cash the YRFI in yesterday’s contest, we try our luck again on Wednesday night as the New York Yankees are set to battle it out against Jack Kochanowicz who averages nearly two runners on base per Inning Pitched.
