With Parker Messick projected to get the start for Cleveland, negative regression looms large over the Los Angeles Dodgers star studded lineup as they face off against an arm who excels at avoiding contact. Before their opening pitch takes place, we turn our attention towards a NL Central matchup between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds as two productive pitchers are set to take the mound.

While the Cleveland Guardians offense struggled to give them the production they needed to be a well rounded contender, their defense helped mask their inefficiencies by keeping the score close enough for them to be competitive. Parker Messick played a role in their run to the AL Central division title last season, averaging an ERA of 2.72 and a FIP of 2.98.
In a highly anticipated matchup against the reigning World Series champions, every bit of Messick’s production on the mound will be needed, facing off against a lineup who finished in the top-2 in OPS. Luckily for Messick, the Guardians back end excels in coverage which will help reduce the amount of variance in his favor, fielding a back line who ranks above league average in Defensive Efficiency.
Competing against Messick is Roki Sasaki, a highly touted pitcher who struggled to find his footing in his rookie campaign, averaging a WHIP of 1.431 even though he generated less than one Hit Against per Inning Pitched. With the Guardians offense projected to replicate last year’s below league average marks in Contact Rate, OPS, and in RBI’s, expect Sasaki to round back into dominant form and keep a clean sheet in the first inning.

While Paul Skenes hogged the spotlight enroute to the NL Cy Young title, Braxton Ashcraft proved he can be a reliable arm for the Pittsburgh Pirates to lean on in 2026, averaging an ERA of 2.71 and a FIP of 2.78. His success on the mound can be attributed to his high Whiff Rate, averaging less than one Hit Against and more than one Strikeout per Inning Pitched.
In a NL Central matchup against the Cincinnati Reds, Ashcraft will have a great opportunity to build on his momentum as he faces off against a lineup who ranks below league average in Contact Rate and in On Base Percentage. With the Reds struggling to make contact, Ashcraft will be able to continue to keep opposing runners out of scoring position, increasing his chances of holding the Reds scoreless in the first inning.
On the other side of the field, Chase Burns is expected to get the start for Cincinnati, an aggressive arm who averaged a FIP of 2.78 while generating Strikeouts at a very high rate. With the Pirates residing at the bottom of the board in Contact Rate, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, On Base Percentage, and in OPS, Burns will be able to continue to create Whiffs at a high rate, neutralizing the top of their order in the process.

Boston Red Sox vs. Houston Astros - Ranger Suarez vs. Lance McCullers Jr. - With Lance McCullers Jr averaging an ERA of 6.51, a FIP of 5.77, and nearly two runners on base per inning, expect the Red Sox to take advantage of his lack of command on the mound and get into scoring position from the opening pitch.
Detroit Tigers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks - Justin Verlander vs. Michael Soroka - Two productive offenses are set to take the field, battling it out against Justin Verlander and Michael Soroka who both average a FIP higher than 3.80 and a back end who ranks just league average or worse in Defensive Efficiency.
