The Philadelphia 76ers make the short trip to Brooklyn after knotting up the series at 1-1 by beating the Nets 145-123 at the Wells Fargo Center on Monday night. The victory included a 51 point third quarter, which tied the NBA playoff record for most points scored in a quarter.

Second-year point guard Ben Simmons fuelled the victory with a triple-double of 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists. Fellow 2019 All-Star Joel Embiid had a game high of 23 points to go along with his 10 rebounds, while Tobias Harris dropped 19 points.

With the Sixers leading for most of the game, many of their reserves gained valuable game experience and produced in those minutes. Forward Mike Scott and 7-3 big man Boban Marjanovic were the biggest contributors off the bench with 15 and 16 points respectively.

Brooklyn Nets (Home)

Head Coach: Kenny Atkinson {All-Time: 90-156 | Teams: BKN}

Season Record: 42-40

Projected Starting Five: (G) D’Angelo Russell – (G) Joe Harris – (F) DeMarre Carroll – (F) Rodions Kurucs – (C) Jarrett Allen

  • G Joe Harris – 13.7 PPG | .474 3P% | .827 FT%
  • C Jarrett Allen – 10.9 PPG | 8.4 RPG | 1.5 BPG

After pulling the upset in game one, the Brooklyn Nets received a rude awakening in game two. The Nets were unable to withstand Philadelphia’s 51 point third quarter, as they managed to score just 23 points in that frame.

Super sub Spencer Dinwiddie was Brooklyn’s top scorer with 19 points, as he was part of a bench unit that combined for 80 points and had four double-digit scorers.

Brooklyn’s All-Star point guard, D’Angelo Russell, was the only starter to hit double figures with 16 points. The former Laker did not excel as a distributor in this game, as he had just two assists while coughing up four turnovers.

The Nets were abused on the glass by the Sixers, as they were out-rebounded 49-32, with Jarrett Allen leading the Nets with a paltry six boards .

What’s At Stake?

The Brooklyn Nets return to the Barclays Center to host their first playoff game since the 2015 postseason, when the likes of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, and Brook Lopez were the headliners.

This will be Philadelphia’s first playoff game against the Nets franchise since their relocation to Brooklyn.

Will the Real Ben Simmons Please Stand Up?

Arguably one of the most fascinating and frustrating players to watch, the reigning Rookie of the Year has played a key role in melding Philadelphia’s collection of scorers into a cohesive unit.

In game one, Simmons failed to get everyone going, as Embiid and Butler were the only ones generating significant offense. That changed in game two, particularly in that explosive third quarter, where 61.1% of Philly’s field goals were assisted, which meant less hero ball from the aforementioned scorers.

With Simmons’ inability to torch teams from beyond the arc, the LSU product and coach Brett Brown will need to come up with drives that will force Brooklyn’s defense to help out and leave Philadelphia’s shooters open.

Brooklyn’s Bench is For Real

Through the first two games of this series, the Nets have averaged 69.5 bench points, which is well above their regular season average of 48.3, which ranked second in the league behind the Clippers.

Yes, the sample size is tiny compared to an 82 game season. However, having that kind of depth is huge, especially when everyone else is shortening their rotations and relying on their starters to carry them to the promised land. If the likes of Dinwiddie and Caris LeVert can keep providing a spark, the Sixers could be in for a long series.

Philadelphia 76ers Roster Notes

There are no injuries or roster changes to report for the Sixers.

Brooklyn Nets Roster Notes

G Allen Crabbe – 4 Apr 2019 – Out (Knee) – Crabbe will have arthroscopic surgery to repair his right knee, ending his regular season and potentially any playoff availability.

F Jared Dudley – 15 Apr 2019 – Day to Day (Calf) – Dudley missed game two on Monday and is questionable to return for game three.

X-Factors: J.J. Redick (PHI) vs Joe Harris (BKN)

With teams placing a higher emphasis on three-point shooting, the demand for long-range marksmen has been higher than ever. This game will feature one of the best three-point shooters of the past decade in J.J. Redick and this year’s Three-Point Shootout Champion in Joe Harris, who also led the league in three-point percentage.

Both of these shooters will be looking to serve as outside threats to keep their opponents honest on defense, while also giving the top scorers on their team more room to operate.

J.J. Redick

Shooting Guard | 6-4, 200lb (193cm, 90kg) | Duke | Exp. 12 Years

18.1 PPG | 2.7 APG | 2.4 RPG | 0.4 SPG | 0.2 BPG | 1.3 TOV | .440 FG% | .397 3P%

Despite having to share the ball with ball-dominant scorers like Butler, Harris, and Embiid, Redick had the highest scoring average of his career in his second year as a Sixer. With Simmons setting him up with quality looks, Redick has been letting it fly more often, as he averaged 8 three-point attempts per game, up from 6.6 attempts last season.

The 34-year-old is far from one-dimensional though, as he has developed into a respectable perimeter defender over the years, often taking up the task of guarding some of the top shooting guards in the league.

Joe Harris

Shooting Guard | 6-6, 218lb (198cm, 98kg) | Virginia | Exp. 4 Years

13.7 PPG | 2.4 APG | 3.8 RPG | 0.5 SPG | 0.2 BPG | 1.6 TOV | .500 FG% | .474 3P%

Prior to this season, Joe Harris was a relative unknown as he spent most of his time on the bench in Cleveland for two years, before developing in Brooklyn for another two years where the Nets were Eastern Conference whipping boys.

Now, the former Virginia Cavalier is one of the most feared three-point gunners in the NBA. After having his coming out party during All-Star Weekend, Harris has done his best to avoid a hangover, as his shooting percentages stayed consistent. Much of this has to do with his careful shot selection, as he simply takes what the defense gives him instead of forcing up bad shots.
