The Mavericks were able to put up a good fight against the Washington Wizards in their last match. While they gave up a number of runs throughout the game, they were able to hold off the Wizards’ potent attack.

Led by Luka Doncic, the Mavericks were able to win the middle two quarters in order to give themselves a cushion for Washington’s late run. Their own offense wasn’t perfect, but it certainly showed a good foundation to build upon.

When Dallas takes on New Orleans, they’ll be facing a hobbled but motivated young roster. The Pelicans fought the reigning champion Raptors to an overtime showdown, so Dallas will have to be prepared for a gritty match.

New Orleans Pelicans (Home)

Head Coach: Alvin Gentry {All-Time 0-1 | MIA, DET, LAC, PHX}

Season Record: 0-1

Projected Starting Five: (G) Lonzo Ball – (G) Jrue Holiday – (G) JJ Redick – (F) Brandon Ingram – (C) Derrick Favors

Top Performers

  • (F) Brandon Ingram – 35.0 MPG | 22.0 PPG | 5.0 RPG | 5.0 APG
  • (G) JJ Redick – 27.0 MPG | 16.0 PPG | 2.0 RPG | .667 3P%
  • (G) Josh Hart – 28.0 MPG | 15.0 PPG | 10.0 RPG | .600 3P%

The Pelicans were dealt a harsh blow when they were told that they would not have Zion Williamson at their disposal for the first two months of the year. However, in their opening match against the Raptors, the Pelicans looked better than expected.

With Jrue Holiday starting at the small forward position, the Pelicans prioritized ball movement and open shots from the get-go. It surprised the Raptors, helping them to find efficient opportunities almost instantly.

In the end, their shot selection and ball-security spelled their doom. But going head to head with the NBA Champions in overtime bodes well for them when they take on the Dallas Mavericks.

What’s at Stake for the Mavericks vs Pelicans?

The New Orleans Pelicans and the Dallas Mavericks have a rather young rivalry in NBA history. In 63 regular season matches, the Mavericks lead the Pelicans 41-22.

The Dallas Mavericks won their opening match. They’ll search for another road win before they head back to Dallas for their home opener.

The New Orleans Pelicans are still searching for their first win of the season. Defeating the Mavericks will bring their record level.

The Mavericks Need More From Their Bench

While Dallas was able to handle the Washington Wizards, they were not without concern around their performance. While their offense was distributed evenly amongst its bench, the efficiency was not there.

Jalen Brunson, who leads the Maverick bench, was a paltry 3-10 from the field in his last match. Tim Hardaway and Courtney Lee, veteran gunners, combined to go 4-12 from the field.

Doncic and Porzingis dominated the offense in the Mavericks’ first game. In order to take down the team-oriented Pelicans, Dallas will need a similarly successful offensive approach.

The Pelicans Are Still Building

When the Toronto Raptors and the New Orleans Pelicans faced off, many expected it to be a landslide in the favor the defending champions. While the young Pelicans put up a good fight, their closing ability was poor which resulted in the loss.

It was clear from that match that the Pelicans have a lot to look forward to with their young core. Brandon Ingram flashed his potential as a scorer while Josh Hart was every bit the two-way threat he looks to be.

The odds will favor the Pelicans more and more if their young pieces can continue to perform. Ingram scored 22 while Hart added 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. If Lonzo Ball can find his rhythm, the Pelicans could certainly beat some oddsmakers.

Point Troubles

The Dallas Mavericks have a fantastic playmaker in Luka Doncic. However, the secondary playmakers on the Mavericks failed to live up to expectations in their first game.

Jalen Brunson and Delon Wright, who came to Dallas via huge financial commitment, were underwhelming in their respective debuts. Brunson was 3-10 with only three assists, while Wright was a passive 1-2 from the field with three assists.

On a more positive note, Wright and Brunson were both positive in +/- rating on the night. Their defensive contributions were invaluable, contributing three steals between them. They will have to balance their contributions to take down the Pelicans.

Can the Pelicans Maintain Their Hot Shooting?

Even without the overtime period, the Pelicans were part of a high-scoring game against the Toronto Raptors in their season opener. Scoring 122 points with the aid of an extra period, the Pelicans were unconscious from deep.

In their opening match, the Pelicans converted on 19 of 45 three-point attempts. The combination of JJ Redick, Nicolo Melli, and Josh Hart accounted for more than half of those three-point field goals.

While maintaining a 42% mark from three is difficult, their shooting is a testament to the playmaking available with their starting lineup. Ball and Holiday are natural point guards while Ingram and Redick move excellently without the ball. Their habits clearly bleed into the reserve unit.

Dallas Mavericks Roster Notes

(F) Ryan Broekhoff – 23 Oct 2019 – Day To Day (Ankle) – Broekhoff was listed as questionable for Wednesday’s (Oct. 23) game against the Wizards.

(F-C) Dwight Powell – 21 Oct 2019 – Out (Hamstring) – Dwight Powell was listed as OUT for Wednesday’s (Oct. 23) game against the Washington Wizards.

New Orleans Pelicans Roster Notes

(F) Darius Miller – 21 Oct 2019 – Out (Achilles) – Miller was listed as OUT for Tuesday’s (Oct. 22) game against the Toronto Raptors.

(F) Zion Williamson – 21 Oct 2019 Out (Right knee) – Williamson underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn right meniscus and is expected to miss an estimated six to eight weeks.

X-Factors: (C) Kristaps Porzingis vs (F) Nicolo Melli

Two European big men will square off in the key matchup of the night.

Porzingis looked great in his return while Melli looked excellent in his debut. Their production will greatly affect the success of their respective sides.

(C) Kristaps Porzingis (7-3, 240lb (221cm, 108kg) | Latvia | 3 Years)

Kristaps Porzingis came back after a year of not playing organized basketball and looked more than comfortable on the court. While he no longer has the ball in his hands as he did in New York, he was excellent as a pick-and-roll operator.

Porzingis certainly wasn’t shy in his Dallas debut. Attempting sixteen field-goals, with seven conversions. Odds are he will attempt more field-goals in his second game. Keep an eye out on his efficiency.

(F) Nicolo Melli (6-9, 235lb (206cm, 106kg) | Italy | Rookie)

In his NBA debut, Nicolo Melli failed to disappoint. Unsure of whether or not he could keep up with the pace of the NBA, he had a beneficial opening night matchup against the plodding Marc Gasol.

Melli punished Gasol by knocking down five of seven three-point field-goals en route to a fourteen-point evening. With shot-blockers like Porzingis and Kleber on the Mavs, his floor spacing will be crucial to the Pelicans’ success.

The Dallas Mavericks won their first game through the brilliance of Luka Doncic. Against an offensively egalitarian team in New Orleans, the Mavs can improve their odds to win with a similar approach in the attacking half.

Why the New Orleans Pelicans Will Win

Oddsmakers may not be kind to the Pelicans upon the first inspection, but they have a lot that makes them favorable. Their offensive ability is certainly a point of concern for most teams. If they can perform on the defensive end, they can take one from the star-studded Mavericks.
