Editor’s Picks

The Nuggets Must Overcome the Free Throw Difference

The Denver Nuggets aren’t exactly getting the “star calls” that the LA Clippers have been receiving in this series. While the Nuggets do play a mostly perimeter-oriented game, they need to overcome the disparity at the line.

The Nuggets have attempted 54 free throws to the Clippers’ 72 over the course of the series. While the difference isn’t stark, it certainly changes the rhythm of the game for the Nuggets in close affairs.

Considering Denver’s streaky shooting, they need to be able to make up the difference when the clock stops and the Clippers go to the line. Whether that is by increasing the tempo or getting to the line more themselves, the Nuggets can’t afford to give away points.

Star Power is Leading the Clippers Late

The LA Clippers may have bought their way to success with their offseason acquisitions of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, but it doesn’t change the impact that they have on the floor for the Clippers.

A late rally in Game 3 by the Clippers brought them to their 2-1 series lead over the Denver Nuggets. Despite being down 97-90, the Clippers were able to hold the Nuggets to just 10 points in the last eight minutes of the fourth quarter.

The scoring and defence provided by Leonard and George are near unmatched in the NBA. They’ve been able to take advantage of the Nuggets’ smaller defenders inside, and blow past their big men on the perimeter. Unless the Nuggets can find a gameplan to slow their production, the Clippers could easily find their way to 3-1.

Nuggets Key Player: (F) Michael Porter Jr.

Unsurprisingly, the Nuggets struggling to score against a talented LA Clippers defensive lineup. Despite losing in Game 3, the Nuggets may have found relief for Murray and Jokic in rookie sensation Michael Porter Jr.

Porter Jr. was inconsistent, to say the least in the Nuggets’ first-round series against the Utah Jazz. But after Game 2 against the Clippers, the rookie has looked solid for the Colorado-based outfit.

Averaging 11.3 points on 41.7% shooting from the field, Porter Jr. had his highest-scoring game of the second round with 18 points and 10 rebounds. A capable shooter with size and athleticism that is tough to match, Porter Jr. could be a game-changer if the Nuggets can implement him in their offence.

Clippers Key Player: (G) Lou Williams

One of the leagues best scorers, Lou Williams is a threat from anywhere on the court. Capable of drawing fouls inside or draining jump shots beyond the arc, Williams is key for the Clippers when George or Leonard take a rest.

The Clippers’ struggles in Game 3 had a lot to do with Williams’ struggles scoring. Williams had a modest night, shooting just 4-11 from the field and 2-5 from three. He did not have a single trip to the free throw line.

Williams was still a team-high +20 on the evening, but his ability to get to the line and spell his teammates’ scoring is key. He’ll have another tough night against Denver’s organized defence, but he must improve his scoring or playmaking to ensure victory.
