Denver’s Bench Can Make a Difference
While the Nuggets struggled to find production across their starting five, with Millsap and Grant struggling, head coach Mike Malone was able to rely on the contributions of his bench unit in tough situations.
Michael Porter Jr., Monte Morris, and Torrey Craig combined for 30 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists off the bench for the Denver Nuggets. While not the first option to score at anytime, their efficiency has been a relief for head coach Malone.
Against a Clippers team with a wealth of scoring options, Denver need contributions across the board. The Nuggets reserves have been solid so far, but in a Game 7 where the defensive intensity is sure to ramp up every extra point will be welcome.
The Clippers Can’t Fade
The LA Clippers looked great in the first half of Game 6 against the Denver Nuggets. After winning the first half 63 to 47, LA were demolished 64 to 35 in the second half en rout to a loss.
The Clippers shot an embarrassing 26.3% in the second half of Game 6 against the Nuggets. In fact, only four players scored in the second half. Their inability to convert on open looks gave Denver all the momentum they needed to win the match.
Expect a more concentrated effort by the Clippers to get better shots in Game 7. With the individual scoring strength of Kawhi Leonard, expect the Clippers to focus their efforts at the rim before settling for perimeter shots.
Nuggets Key Player: (C) Nikola Jokic
In an elimination game, Nuggets All-Star Nikola Jokic put forth his best game of the series. Hitting clutch shots, improving his defensive play, and shooting with confidence made the difference for Jokic.
In Game 6 Jokic posted 34 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, and a block and steal on the evening. He caused issues for LA’s slow-footed centers on the perimeter and for their smaller forwards in the paint.
Jokic can be a game changer in Game 7 against the Clippers. He is one player on the court that is always a mismatch for the Clippers. If Jokic can find his rhythm early, there is likely no stopping him.
Clippers Key Player: (F) Kawhi Leonard
All eyes are on Clippers superstar Kawhi Leonard. For all the load management and injury issues during the regular season, high intensity moments in elimination games are why LA brought Leonard in.
In Game 6 Leonard contributed 25 points, eight rebounds, five steals, two assists, and a block on 8-18 shooting from the field. While he wasn’t particularly accurate on the night, his ability to convert at the rim was crucial for the Clippers.
If Leonard can establish himself in the paint early, the Clippers have a good chance of taking this game. His penchant for drawing extra defenders and create opportunities for others has given Denver fits all series.
