The Sixers’ Scoring is a Surprise
The Philadelphia 76ers are certainly missing a crucial piece when they enter this series without Ben Simmons. He’s an All-Star talent with All-Defensive ability. Without him at the point of attack, Philadelphia has chosen to lean in the direction of their attack.
In bubble games that Simmons played, the Sixers scored 108.1 points per 100 possessions, compared to scoring 121.3 points per 100 possessions without him. They’ve also been outscoring their opponents per 100 by 3.7 points.
With Shake Milton running the point, the offense is running off of Joel Embiid in the post. While it has limited their offensive creativity, Philly’s scorers have been feasting off of the opportunities he creates.
Can Boston Defend the Kick Out?
Brad Stevens is one of the best coaches in the NBA, proven by his team’s fourth-ranked defense and offense. Boston loves to pack the paint, holding teams to just 43.5 points inside per game. But can they manage that against a player like Embiid?
The Celtics owe their defensive success to the mobility of their players. At the center, Daniel Theis has supplanted any competing center on the Boston roster due to his ability to protect the rim and closeout at the three-point line. Against a Sixers offense that will more than likely feature Embiid in the post, Boston will have to help intelligently.
In the bubble, the Sixers are shooting a red hot 41.6% from deep. Whether or not the Celtics rotation can limit Philly’s shooters will be crucial to their success.
Sixers Key Player: (C) Joel Embiid
We’re still processing this Joel Embiid dunk …
— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) May 6, 2018
In this series against the Boston Celtics, Joel Embiid can be the best player on the court. There isn’t a player on the Celtics that can match him in the post.
While he can be inconsistent, Embiid has helped maximize his teammates contributions in his limited minutes in the bubble. Embiid is a dominant post player, and the injection of Shake Milton in the starting lineup has been crucial.
For Embiid his focus will be on efficiency. While his stats in the bubble aren’t representative of his true usage, his 1.6 three-point attempts per game is certainly encouraging if Brett Brown wants him to focus on the paint.
Celtics Key Player: (G) Kemba Walker
— Boston Celtics (@celtics) August 11, 2020
The Kyrie Irving experiment didn’t work for Boston and they’re now led at point by a much lower maintenance point guard in Kemba Walker.
While Walker’s contributions in the bubble are limited (13.8 points per game), his efficiency has been more than acceptable as he’s shot 47.9% from the floor and 41.4% from deep.
The Celtics are a dangerous overall unit when Walker is in form. His three-point shooting is key, as he scores from deep at 41.3% in wins and just 31.6% in losses.
