All Three Games Predictions and Picks

The Brewers aren’t going down without a fight. The NL has been insane this year and Sunday is only going to add to it – we like the Brewers money line.

Pick:

Brewers to win -110

The Phillies are thankful to even be alive at this stage in the game considering the last week they had. Aaron Nola is the best pitcher taking the mound for any of the teams who need a win, so we’re going to go Phillies money line.

Pick:

Phillies to win -148

San Diego will be trying in this game, but not playing like it’s a do or die contest. San Francisco is playing for its life, so we like the Giants money line.

Pick:

Giants to win -150

Comes Down to the Final Game of the Year for Milwaukee

Milwaukee hasn’t been above .500 at any point this year. However, it might not need to be. Should the Brewers win and the Giants lose, Milwaukee will be in the postseason. That would also force the Cardinals to play its final two games of the year, which would be in a double-header against the Detroit Tigers on Monday.

Milwaukee won a 3-0 contest on Friday behind an absolutely dominant start from Brandon Woodruff: eight innings, two hits, one walk and 10 strikeouts. However, the matchup on Sunday is two much less proven pitchers.

6-foot-4 lefty Brett Anderson toes the rubber for Milwaukee. He’s been good but not great this year, with a 4-3 record, 4.00 ERA and 1.27 WHIP That said, he’s been better in his last two starts, picking up two wins with two quality starts, going 12 total innings, giving up nine hits and three earned runs while striking out 10.

Austin Gomber will make just his fourth start of the season, but he’s been really good no matter whether or not he’s starting or coming out of the bullpen. Gomber went six innings, giving up no runs and four hits in his last start, picking up a win against the Royals. He’s given up just five earned runs in 25 innings this season, for a 1.80 ERA.

The two-position players to watch in this one are Christian Yelich and Paul Goldschmidt. Yelich has been cold all year, but even more so of late, going 1-for-16 in the last five games. He was an MVP runner up in 2019, so all of his shortcomings in 2020 could be forgotten with a big game on Sunday.

Goldschmidt has cooled off too, going just 5-of-25 his past six games, but is still the best hitter on the Cardinals. They’ll need him to be clutch.

Editor’s Picks

Phillies Need a Win to Stay Alive

The Cardinals aren’t necessarily eliminated with a loss. The Giants aren’t necessarily eliminated with a loss. The Phillies season is over with a loss and it’s miraculous they haven’t already been eliminated after losing six of their past seven.

The Phillies have the right man on the mound in Aaron Nola. His 5-4 record hasn’t told the story of his dominant season, where he’s posted a 3.06 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. However, he hasn’t been as sharp in his previous two starts, picking up losses on both occasions while giving up eight total runs in 11.1 innings.

The only thing that’s certain is Nola has to go deep because the Phillies bullpen has been atrocious, blowing 14 (!!) saves this season.

Giants Trying to Avoid Collapse

The Giants have lost three of four, so their playoff fate will come down to the final game of the season. A win doesn’t definitively get them in, but a loss almost certainly eliminates them. The math and the tiebreakers in this weird wild card format can still go many ways, but the point is, a loss essentially ends the year.

San Francisco will turn to veteran Drew Smyly to toe the rubber, who hasn’t had a decision in his six appearances this year but has been solid. Smyly has a 3.38 ERA and 1.17 WHIP and has led the Giants to a 4-2 record in games he’s pitched this year.

This game is a total wildcard (no pun intended) because the Padres still haven’t announced who will start their game. That may be advantage Giants, playing a team that is already locked into the No. 4 seed in the NL and doesn’t have much to play for.
