Roster Notes

St. Louis Cardinals

  • SP Jack Flaherty will start Game 2 for the Cardinals. Flaherty was the best pitcher in the NL in the second half posting a 0.91 ERA after the All-Star Game.
  • 2B Kolten Wong is nursing a sore hamstring and his availability will be in jeopardy for the series.
  • Cards’ veteran Matt Carpenter continues to hold a bench role as rookie Tommy Edman gets the start at 3B.

Atlanta Braves

  • SP Mike Foltynewicz will start Game 2 and Mike Soroka will follow in Game 3.
  • OF Ronald Acuna Jr. sat out the last week of the season rehabbing a sore groin muscle.
  • 1B Freddie Freeman is battling bone spurs in his elbow but expects to play in the series.

Game Prediction – St. Louis Cardinals vs Atlanta Braves

Two finesse pitchers take the mound in Game 1 and that could be trouble when facing two lineups that can hit the ball out of the ballpark with regularity. If there is an advantage in this series for either team, it goes to the damage potential of the Braves lineup.

If Miles Mikolas can’t locate on Thursday night and the Braves’ superstars are healthy then the Cardinals could be dipping into their bullpen quickly in Game 1.

The same goes for the Braves’ starter Dallas Keuchel, who certainly has impressive postseason experience after winning a title with Houston in 2017, but his last three starts of the year were putrid and he must pitch better if Atlanta wants to advance.

Expect a few long balls in this first game and throughout the series. The Braves are the favorites going in and they should take care of business in Game 1 in a high-scoring affair. Also, look for Atlanta to win the series in four games.

Game Prediction, Final Score: Braves 7, Cardinals 4
